Google Earth celebra sus 1.000 millones de descargas
Google Earth, denominado originalmente Keyhole, fue creado por la empresa del mismo nombre en octubre de 2004. Se trataba de un programa de pago de la empresa hasta que fue comprado por Google en 2005, cuando pasó a llamarse Google Earth. Este programa fue lanzado teniendo como principal novedad la posibilidad de acceder a una versión gratuita. Dentro de Google Earth también se incorpora Google Maps, ya que sirve para encontrar las calles, avenidas y negocios y ampliarlas de manera más legible.
Este miércoles Google celebra los 1.000 millones de descargas de este programa gratuito tanto para PC como para dispositivos móviles. "Estamos orgullosos de nuestros 1.000 millones pero estamos aún más sorprendidos por la manera en que la gente ha utilizado Google Earth para explorar el mundo", asegura el equipo de Google en su blog oficial.
Para celebrar esta cifra, Google ha habilitado la web oneworldmanystories.com donde se recopilan historias de los usuarios que utilizan Google Earth para "seguir sus sueños, conocer lugares nuevos y lejanos o hacer del mundo un lugar mejor". Entre las historias que se recogen en 'One World, Many Stories' destaca la del profesor de la Universidad de Australia David Kennedy. Este profesor ha utilizado Google Earth para explorar miles de kilómetros cuadrados en Arabia Saudi y Jordania. Kennedy ha descubierto tumbas antiguas y jeroglíficos de al menos 2.000 años de historia, todo sin salir de su escritorio.
Otra de las historias recogidas en esta web es la del arquitecto Barnaby Gunning, que después del terremoto ocurrido cerca de L'Aquila (Italia) en abril de 2009 animó a sus conciudadanos para empezar a reconstruir la ciudad prácticamente en 3D.
"Es alentador ver cómo Google Earth ha tocado las vidas de tantas personas. Sabemos que lo mejor está por venir", aseguran desde Google.
