El Pentágono supervisará las redes sociales en busca de amenazas
El Pentágono quiere destinar 29 millones de euros (42 millones de dólares) para financiar el monitoreo de los 'social media' y así hacer un seguimiento de la formación, desarrollo y difusión de ideas e identificar la desinformación y los intentos de fomentar el malestar. La decisión planteada por la Agencia de Investigación de Proyectos Avanzados de Defensa (DARPA, sus siglas en inglés) viene a raíz del uso de las redes sociales por los insurgentes en Afganistán e Irak y las amenazas de grupos como Anonymous.
Con esta nueva medida, el gobierno estadounidense busca generar contenidos de forma automática en los medios sociales a través de cuentas falsas o 'bots'. Según informa el diario británico The Guardian, por el momento la Agencia de Investigación no ha querido hacer ningún comentario al respecto sobre este tema.
DARPA también quiere que con esta iniciativa se identifique a las personas involucradas en las actividades, cuáles son sus intenciones y el impacto de las campañas online para dar forma a las opiniones o recabar apoyo sobre un tema, de acuerdo con un documento presentado.
Los esfuerzos de EE.UU. para controlar los medios de comunicación social se centraron en un principio en operaciones en Oriente Medio. Sin embargo, otros grupos online de otros países están empezando a ser clasificados como amenazas por parte de las fuerzas militares.
El pasado mes de marzo, al Comando Central de EE.UU. (Centcom) le fue adjudicado un contrato para desarrollar un software que genera las denominadas "cuentas títere", es decir, cuentas con identidades falsas utilizadas para promover una visión particular al tiempo que oculta la verdadera identidad del usuario.
